Zone 2 training involves exercising at a pace where you can maintain a conversation — typically 60–70% of your maximum heart rate. It's a steady-state, manageable effort that enhances the body's ability to oxidize fat and improves mitochondrial efficiency.
At this intensity, key adaptations occur that improve both heart and brain health. It's also sustainable over the long term, which matters more than any single intense session. I personally gravitate towards Zone 2 training — long walks and bike rides at a conversational pace.
How Much Cardio Is Enough?

Moderate-intensity activities — brisk walking, cycling, or swimming — are accessible to most people regardless of fitness level, and they contribute significantly to maintaining cognitive function over time.
Regular, moderate activity is enough to reap cognitive benefits without the risk of burnout or injury. Consistency matters far more than intensity.
Practical Ways to Achieve Your Cardio Goals
Running isn't the only path to a healthier brain. Cycling — whether stationary or road-based — offers excellent cardiovascular benefits. Swimming provides a full-body workout that's gentle on the joints. Even regular brisk walks through your neighborhood can contribute substantially to your weekly cardio goals.
The key is consistency. Find an activity you enjoy, and the benefits will follow naturally.
